Harry Potter mystery walk

Drawing inspiration from AmazingCo's mystery picnics, I created a tailored Harry Potter-themed experience for a close friend's 25th birthday celebration.

How it works.

We kicked off the adventure by giving participants a clue at a friend's house, and they set off on a journey to unravel the next stop. Each solved riddle revealed the next location, moving them closer to their final destination. But this wasn't your typical treasure hunt. Along the way, they gathered picnic food items, building excitement for a grand feast at the end.

I was inspired by the mystery picnics by AmazingCo and thought to myself, "How cool would it be if I could do something like this for my friend and tailor it not just to Harry Potter/wizard theme but also the birthday girl herself!"

The design process.

After countless hours of scouring the internet and seeking recommendations from friends, I was able to lock in the stops for the mystery adventure. Just like the Horcruxes that needed to be destroyed, each location marked the demise of one Horcrux for our hero.

The iconic Marauder's Map was the main inspiration for the design. The goal was to replicate its hand-drawn, highly detailed style so I incorporated icons and illustrations with intricate line-work, evoking the feel of old, vintage maps or scrolls into the designs.

The primary colors were beige and earthy browns, giving a sense of aged parchment. This choice added the classic and mystical aesthetic to the experience.

Reflection.

This project opened a world of responsive web design for me. I was introduced to essential design principles during the process and how to turn a design inspiration into design elements. Most importantly, it sparked my interest in UX design, igniting my passion for creating user-friendly experiences.

Looking back on this first web design project, I see room for growth. With the knowledge I've gained since then, I look forward to redesign this website with the below improvements:

  • Enhanced responsiveness: a mobile-first approach will ensure it works well on all screen sizes.

  • More clues and challenges: The next iteration will introduce a broader array of clues, each varying in difficulty.

  • Dynamic layouts and UI design: These additions will make the experience even more engaging and visually appealing.

This passion project has been a delightful part of my journey, and I'm excited about its ongoing improvement as I become more experienced in design.
